Department of Physiology
The subject of General Human Physiology, Biochemistry, Nutrition and Dietetics is taught at 1st B.D.S level and the Post graduate students study the subject again as part of their basic medical sciences.
Educational Objectives:
- To understand the structure and function of the normal cell and tissue.
- To understand the basic function of the major organ systems of the body.
- To understand the process of homeostasis and interactions between organ systems to maintain a healthy individual.
- To understand the major bio-molecules and the biochemical reactions involved in anabolism and catabolism.
- To understand basic principles of nutrition and its importance in oral health.
- To understand the sources of vitamins and minerals, their importance and the effect of their deficiency on oral health.
- To correlate how disturbance in normal physiology and biochemistry can affect the oral health.
- To have thorough understanding of the subject and applied aspects as the Physiology and Biochemistry of today is the Medicine of tomorrow.
Teaching – Learning Methods Adopted
- Lectures: Using chalk and board as well as power-point presentations.
- Doubt solving sessions.
- Seminars given by students and discussions.
- Mock papers.
- Annual Physiology-Biochemistry quiz.
- Department has an excellent question bank of MCQs, SAQs and LAQs on all topics in the curriculum.
- Departmental library which has a good collection of books covering both theory and practicals which the students are encouraged to use.
- To encourage the students to perform better, two prizes are given annually to the top scorers in the university exam.
Results :
Our results in the past years have been extremely good and our students have done us proud by their consistent performance.
- Academic Year 2011-12: Shloka Badve was University topper in Physio-Biochem scoring 179/200.
- Academic Year 2015-16: Sonam Yadav was University Topper in Physio-Biochem scoring 185/200.
- 2017-18 results at a glance: 55 students scored more than 70% marks in Physio-Biochem at MUHS exam of which 28 scored distinction. Highest scorers were Amruta Chavan and Aditi Sonawane with 175/200 and they stood 2nd in our subject at University level.
