Department of General Microbiology

PATHOLOGY :-

  • Experiments are conducted in laboratory ,blood samples are taken and the practicals are done. Eg blood grouping ,clotting time.
  • Demonstration of some of the tecniques are done in the lab.
  • Preparation of blood smears and staining them on differential count is done
  • Histopathology , practicals and specimens demonstration is done.
  • Hemoglobinometry and hemocytometry is taught.
  • Slides of various diseases are shown to the students.
  • Specimens of various diseases are shown to the students which are kept in the museum.

AIM :

Student should be competent to apply scientific study of disease processes, tissues and organs to the study of pathology and practice of dentistry.

OBJECTIVES :

  • Enabling the student,
    • To demonstrate and apply basic facts ,concepts and theories in the field of pathology.
    • To recognize and analyze pathological changes at macroscopically and microscopical levels and explain their observations in terms of disease processes.
    • To integrate knowledge from the basic sciences, clinical medicine and dendistry in the study of pathology.
    • To demonstrate understanding of the capabilities and limitations of morphological pathology in its contribution to medicine , dentistry and biological research.
    • To demonstrate ability to consult resource materials outside lectures, laboratory and tutorial class

    MICROBIOLOGY :-

Introduction with reference to Medical and Dental microbiology including public health and preventive aspects of infections are taught to the students

    • Microscopes, itsvarious parts, micrometry and care of microscope is taught to the students
    • Gram staining and other staining is done by the student in the lab.
    • Parasitology specimens are kept and taught to the students.
    • Elementary knowledge of virology and mycology is given.
    • Morphology, laboratory diagnosis, physiology, pathogenesis and classification of microorganism is done ad shown.
    • Microorganism are identified and observed by the students
    • Instruments used in the laboratory are also shown and given the importance of the same to the students.
    • Slides are prepared and are observed under the microscopes
    • Methods and Principles of Sterilizations are taught.
    • Auto immunity emphasis on practical application is done.
    • Brief account of culture media and culture techniques are shown.

    AIM :

To introduce the student to the exciting world of microbes.

    OBJECTIVES :

KNOWLEDGE AND UNDERSTANDING At the end of microbiology course student is expected to:

    • Understand the basics of various branches of microbiology and able to apply the knowledge relevantly.
    • Apply the knowledge gained in related medical subjects like General Medicine and General Surgery and Dental subjects like Oral Pathology, Community Dentistry,Periodontics Oral Surgery, Pedodontics, Conservative Dentistry and Oral Medicine in higher classes.
